Cognitive stimulation therapy was applied to the experimental group, and conventional cognitive therapy was applied to the control group. The homogeneity between the two groups was verified, and social interaction tests were conducted before and after arbitration. The intervention period was 14 sessions in seven weeks, 45-60 minutes per session, twice per week. Both groups showed homogeneity.
In both groups, social interactions in verbal and overall points were significantly improved after arbitration. The experimental group showed a significant improvements in non-verbal social interaction, there was no significance in the control group. In addition, the variation in social interaction before and after arbitration was higher in the experimental group by 0.25 points compared to the control group, but there was no statistical significance.
In conclusion, the study found that cognitive stimulation therapy could yield more effective results than conventional cognitive therapy with the elderly living in the community that have mild cognitive impairment. In future studies, study on the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation therapy based on cognitive levels is needed.
